Abac Musings

A foreign teacher at ABAC (Assumption University of Thailand) is often thought of as being a token teacher for his/her native English abilities. This Blog is "musings" about living while teaching in an international university in Southeast Asia in one of the most exotic cities in the world - Bangkok.

Silk Road Adventure: Arrival to Xian

We arrived at the airport in Xianyang about 40 KM from Xian. It was late afternoon and we got a taxi right away. The plane was virtually empty.

The taxi driver once more talked us into going to another hotel other than the Wuyi we had planned on. Oh, well, I guess they have to get their cut. The hotel was ok and it was in the middle of the town only two or three blocks from the Wuyi. We messed around for a while, got something eat but had no luck finding our noodle people from last time. That whole section of the town had been torn down and all the shops gone. Maybe we can find them later.

The first night we walked across the street and got a Chinese message. An hour's worth and cheap. We had gotten one when we were in Guilin and they are a bit better than the Thai style. It was a pleasant way to start our trip.

We planned to check out modes of travel and decide on the best way to go on the silk road. Our tourist lady, Ms. Time was off running a tour and would not be back for a week or so. We could not wait so we planned to do it alone.

We did talk to her company and they quoted some pretty expensive prices. Again, we would do this on our own with my wife's well practiced Chinese. No way could I pull this off with my Chinese.
